Dinosaur for Sale (still)!

04.10.2009 20:01   29 views   0 comments

Bonhams Butterfields tried to unload a dinosaur skeleton Saturday, but the piece was one of 17 lots that didn't move at the Natural History auction at the Venetian in Las Vegas. The auction house had originally hoped to pull in estimated $6 million for the 66-million-year-old bones of a 40-foot Tyronnosaurus Rex. In all, it was shooting for around $8 million in sales. Only 60 percent of the lots coming under the gavel sold.

The T. rex skeleton that nobody wanted (at least not at that price), named Samson, is the third most complete ever pulled from the ground, according to Thomas Lindgren, Co-Director of Natural History at Bonhams Butterfields.

"'Samson'" is one of four known T. rex specimens which display characteristics that set it apart from other examples of the species," Lindgren continues. "In the dynamic science of paleontology, variation from one specimen to the next may indicate varying developmental phases, normal variations within a species, or it may represent the discovery of an entirely new species. As it stands, experts identify 'Samson' as Tyrannosaurus rex."

Samson was the first T. rex to come on the scene since 1997, when Sotheby's auctioned Sue, a dinosaur of similar size. The Field Museum in Chicago picked her up for a record $8.36 million - a price that still has not been topped. Sue is considered to be the largest and most complete T. rex ever excavated.

Breguet Ref. 1160 Marie Antoinette Replica Pocket Watch To Be In LA NYC

04.10.2009 19:01   35 views   0 comments

Want to check out the Breguet Ref. 1160 pocket watch that you've been hearing so much about? Didn't get a chance to see it while it was at the Breguet exhibit at the Lourve in Paris? Well if you are in Los Angeles or New York City at the right times in October, you'll have your chance to see this amazing replica. No, you won't get to see the original. That is going to be unavailable for the masses to enjoy for a while I suspect.

If you are unfamiliar with the story, it is pretty simple and you can Google it for more details, though understand that no one really knows the whole story, so take what you read about the "later history" of the watch with a grain of salt. Breguet was commissioned almost 200 years ago to make the most complex watch in the world for Marie Antoinette. She died before it was completed, but Breguet eventually finished the Marie Antoinette Pocket watch after years of efforts. After passing ownership several times over the years, the watch eventually ended up as part of a pocket watch and clock exhibit at a museum in Jerusalem, Israel. There it was mysteriously stolen in the early 1980s, and just as mysteriously discovered again about 2 years ago. Which leads me back to the replica. Swatch Group (which owns Breguet) owner Nicolas Hayek wanted to make a replica of the Marie Antoinette watch that was faithful to the original. Only problem is that he didn't have the original to model it after. All that existed were some diagrams and photos. Ironically, soon after the replica was finished, the original turned up. I am sure the people who spent the few years painstakingly trying to reproduce the pocket watch were frustrated to say that least - that if they had only waited a bit longer they would have had the original to check out. Oh well!

Breguet is planning a quick tour of the Breguet Ref. 1160 to be shown at the Breguet Boutiques in LA and NYC this month (see details below). The one-off piece is NOT for sale, but you'll conveniently be at a Breguet store if you are feeling up to a new timepiece acquisition.

Celine Dmitri Shearling Bag, Handbag of the Day

04.10.2009 18:01   67 views   0 comments

This is a comfort bag one to be worn with your favorite jeans and a cozy sweater. The shoulder bag is done in soft sand shearling with a cream-colored adjustable log shoulder strap. This Celine bag has calf-leather trim and a silvertone clasp. Not everyone is a fan of this bag, over at BagWhiz they likened it to the UGG boot, a trend which has long since sailed. It sells for $2,200.

The Fairmont Kea Lani

04.10.2009 17:02   29 views   0 comments

The Fairmont Kea Lani
The Fairmont Kea Lani is one of Maui's finest (and most expensive) hotels, with its own unique character. Luxury and casual relaxation are rarely so effortlessly combined.

Firstly, the property is gorgeous (see above). I know, I know; throw a rock in Maui and you'll hit something scenic, but the Fairmont, in Maui's lavish Wailea area, doesn't impose upon the landscape. Because the hotel wasn't originally a Fairmont, it doesn't ascribe to the usual layout standards and blends nicely into the island. The pools are lovely and include a terrific 140-foot waterslide, which takes you directly from the pool bar to the basketball net. (For those looking for a quieter or more romantic place to sun and swim, there's a chicly appointed adults-only pool set at a distance away.) One of the real draws is the beach upon which it sits -- all beaches in Hawaii are public by law, but the rock outcroppings on either side of the stretch keep the beach feeling private and secure, and the sand is a beautiful mixture of white sand and ... sand-colored sand, creating a lovely marbleized effect.

Not only does the hotel fit into the environment, but it respects it, as well. Fairmonts are known for being among the greener choices in the bunch, and this hotel recycles water, uses biodegradable materials when possible, they give food scraps to local pig farmers, and in each room they have a special thermostat that starts cooling when you check in and stops when you check out -- it's wired to the computer. There's more: "The smart thermostat detects when a door is opened, signaling motion detectors to scan the room. If no motion is detected, the temperature adjusts to five degrees higher." These thermostats reportedly save them over 20 percent on their electric bill AND help save the Earth.

Every room in the Fairmont Kea Lani is a suite (unless it's a whole villa), and each has its own refrigerator (not a minibar) and a microwave. There's also a "Deli" located on the premise which sell everything from cereal for the kids to beer and wine for grown-up time. The hotel is equally popular with families and with couples on honeymoons -- maybe other hotels should pick up on this "I don't want to spend $200 in a restaurant every night" mentality. The hotel is by no means cheap; prices range from $339 for a one-bedroom suite (the smallest room they've got) to $2,000 per night for a 3-bedroom, 2200 square foot, ocean-view villa (includes rental of a minivan, convertible or luxury car). It's nice that they give you the option to eat and drink by your own rules.

The guests and staff alike seem to love the place. A bartender, an east-coaster who's been there since before it became a Fairmont eight years ago, noted the "casual elegance" of the place, and the guests agreed. "At the Four Seasons, you have to have closed toed shoes, and dress up ... here it's just more casual. And the staff remembers you -- they don't have it all plugged into their computer; they recognize you from last year, know you by name and know what you like for breakfast." His wife added with a relishing smile that the nearby golf course is fantastic. The bartender reminded me of the type you'd find in a pub in Brooklyn or even Dublin; easily comfortable with the well-to-do and the young partying types, and striking up a witty conversation with everyone. "I don't feel like I have to 'perform,'" he said.

"Casual elegance" really is an excellent descriptor for the hotel. The staff exudes an almost midwestern friendliness, and the guests are smiling and unaffected. No one around the pool was sucking in their stomach. I liked that.

We wouldn't put it on Luxist if it weren't a fabulous place, but in the interest of full-disclosure, here are the drawbacks: Nothing is included but coffee, neither breakfast nor boogie boards, so unless you're a coffee-and-cigarettes-only type, you should expect to spend some money (and cigarettes aren't included, either). The decor in the villas is somewhat bland -- there isn't much on the walls and nothing feels Hawaiian or otherwise remarkable -- but they are slated to be remodeled in a couple of months. Lastly, the hotel has no shuttle and is a $56 cab ride from the airport before tip.

If that stuff doesn't phase you too much (and after you have a look through the gallery, it probably won't), I recommend you come and visit the Fairmont Kea Lani. "Every hotel attracts a certain kind of guest," said an Indiana-native PR rep. "I love the guests we get here. They're so relaxed." We looked around and found she was quite right. Someone urgently stopped her as we were heading out, but it was only to ask how much a nearby sculpture cost. Some people just can't turn it off.

Ancient Benedictine Abbey For Sale

04.10.2009 16:02   28 views   0 comments

A few miles from the Italian town of Siena, an abbey, founded by the Benedictine Order in 1031 is up for sale. L'Abbadia is on a hilltop overlooking the village of Crete Senesi. This unique property has been restored, preserving the bell tower and the Romanesque church and the cloister with its brick arches. The living rooms and the cells have been renovated and large glass windows set into the upper arches give an oddly modern look, like a city loft building. The property is now in use as a guest house and has an elevator which goes to all four floors and has a commercial kitchen. A listing with Knight Frank says they are seeking offers in excess of €10,000,000.

Every wonder what it is like to own a wine chateau? You can get a little closer with a new computer game, Wine Tycoon from Got Game Limited lets players create vineyards in France's most prestigious wine regions including Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne. Players have to build their winery, tend their vineyards, hire staff and then produce the wine. Players go through all stages of wine development from planting grapes to dealing with a virtual bottling plant. In order to succeed at the game, crops must be maintained and equipment has to be maintained. The game also includes a Wine Encyclopedia with a glossary of wine terms, grape varieties and wine regions. It will be available next month for $19.99.

James Franco in the Hollywood Hills, Estate of the Day

04.10.2009 14:01   41 views   0 comments

What is going on with James Franco recently? First the young movie star raised eyebrows with the news that he would be starring on the soap opera "General Hospitial" and now he has put his Sunset-Strip area home on the market. The LA Times Hot Property column reports that Franco has listed his Sunset Strip-area compound for $3.695 million. The Spanish-style villa located very near Chateau Marmont was built in 1923 and has three bedrooms. The home, which has vaulted and beamed ceilings and an open floor plan has had a major renovation. It looks to be extremely well-staged for maximum appeal so I don't think this decor reflects Franco's tastes. The home was bought through a trust in 2006 for $2.325 million. The master bedroom suite includes views of the city and a large bathroom with a striking 19th century marble bathtub. There is a pool and a small guest house on the property. The listing is here.

Chaumet Dandy Arty Edition Watch

04.10.2009 13:02   35 views   0 comments

I really like the look of this watch, but I just can't get over the name "Dandy." It is a men's watch, and I know the classic meaning of the term. Yes, you can partially forgive the nomenclature given Chaumet being French, but still. Imagine looking at the back of your watch and constantly being reminded that you are wearing a "Dandy."

Aside from that, the looks of the Dandy watches have always tickled me. Even the jumping hour version that Chaumet made for the Only Watch 2009 watch auction is great to look at - and isn't that the point of a nice watch? This particular Chaumet Dandy watch is known as the Arty Edition, and brings a new cushion shaped case as well as new lug structures (that look quite fine indeed). You also have the crown located at the 12 o'clock position. The dark tones are almost sumptuous with the patent leather strap and "racing strip" that extends through the length of the case on to the straps. The watch is 40mm wide in steel, while another version similar to the Only Watch 2009 Chaumet Dandy jumping hour watch will be available in 18k rose gold. The jumping hour versions of the watch are limited to 120 piece, while the Art Edition Dandy watches are not limited to any specific amount.

Inside the watches are custom made for Chaumet movements. They are the CP12V-V and CP12V-III. Both are mechanical and automatic, with special "Dandy" automatic rotors. A good looking fine of classically French designed timepieces.

Handbag collectors will be impressed by the large selection of Judith Leiber evening bags, including clutches, shoulder bags and minaudieres.

The public is invited to the exhibition on view from Friday, October 2 through Tuesday, October 6. Doyle New York is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

Born in Brooklyn, Beverly Sills was catapulted into international stardom singing Cleopatra in New York City Opera's landmark 1966 production of Handel's Julius Caesar. Acknowledged as "America's Queen of Opera," she appeared on the cover of Newsweek in 1969 and Time in 1971, and traveled to the world's leading opera houses as an ambassador for American talent. In 1975, she made a triumphal Metropolitan Opera debut as Pamira in Rossini's The Siege of Corinth, receiving an 18-minute ovation. Retiring from singing, she became Director of the New York City Opera (1979-1989), then Chairman of Lincoln Center (1994-2002), and finally Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera (2002-2005).

Evo South Condo Development

04.10.2009 9:02   40 views   0 comments

The South Park area of Los Angeles has been booming lately. The area is the site of the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Staples Center and the "L.A. Live" project. This summer the big news was that a major grocery store returned to the area, signaling the growing residential contingent. EVO is a high-rise residence building in the neighborhood and is the only LEED certified high rise residence in L.A. The property includes a pool and sun terrace, fitness studio and rooftop entertainment lounge with an outdoor fireplace. Many units have beautiful horizon and city views. The building also has concierge service, a 24-hour lobby attendant and four levels of secure parking.

The last of Evo's sale-priced residences went on sale earlier this month starting in the mid $300,000s. Generally the condominiums are priced from the low-$400,000s to $3.7 million and range from 730 to over 3,500 square feet. Residences feature hardwood floors and wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, large, operable windows, decks, Juliet balconies and walk-in closets

03.10.2009 20:01   33 views   0 comments

marco pierre whiteThere seems to be an undeniable link between soccer and cooking in England. Gordon Ramsay was a soccer player and now England's first celebrity chef, Marco Pierre White, will be presiding over a unique cooking contest featuring top players. Three players from Manchester United, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand will be cooking a three-course meal on November 26. The event will take place at Old Trafford Football Stadium in Manchester, England and will include a champagne reception and a judging of which course was best. It will cost £275 per person. Marco Pierre White is famous for his temper and though he has mellowed in recent years it should still be an entertaining evening.

Red Cross Plans Fund-Raising Auction

03.10.2009 19:02   50 views   0 comments

Everybody is selling their treasures to make money these days, even the American Red Cross. The NY Times reports that the Red Cross is selling more than 150 million items including a Cartier clock lamp, original Christmas Seals and other archival materials. The organization has had to let go of employees and take other cost cutting measures one of which is closing its Lorton, Virginia warehouse and outsourcing storage and archival operations. The organization is going to make more money through the closing of the warehouse (around $3 million) than the auction (around $200,000). The sales will done with Heritage Auctions online through February. Other pieces of memorabilia from the warehouse, including paintings by Norman Rockwell will stay with the Red Cross while uniforms, flags and some other memorabilia will be sent to the National Archives.

Palmer and Sons Leather Bag No. 9, Handbag of the Day

03.10.2009 18:01   33 views   0 comments

It's the handmade details that charm when it comes to the leather designs of Palmer Sons. The Vancouver-based company makes their leather goods one at a time and each has its own unique qualities eschewing the blandness of perfection for something more personalized. Their suitcases look like vintage pieces, exquisite relics of a time when leather goods reflected the spirit and details of their creator. The smallest bag in their line is the Handmade Bag No 09 shown above. I is made of chestnut bridle leather with brass rivets, stainless steel hangers and a zebra wood toggle. The exterior size is approximately 8" x 6" x 3.5" and the straps are adjustable and can be removed to use the bag as clutch. All details can be customized. This bag sells for $230 to the U.S.

The Biden From Terra Plana, A Shoe Fit For An Eco-Friendly VP

03.10.2009 17:03   35 views   0 comments

This is probably the only time I've seen something named after the Vice President cost more than something named after the President. The Biden, which sells for $190, is part of the newest collection from Terra Plana, a London-based shoe company. The Pop Series is a line of modular shoes made with recycled, natural, and biodegradable materials. The Barack shoe ($180) and the Biden ankle boot are the first two styles introduced from the new line and are constructed from glue-less technology. These shoes feature just 10-12 components while the average shoe is comprised of between 50 and 70. The series is designed to be lightweight and flexible and has an interchangeable sole.

Will Jarvis' Science Project Wine

03.10.2009 16:02   34 views   0 comments

will harvis science projectWill Jarvis' Science Project is an unusual name for a wine but this Cabernet Franc has a unique story. The Mecury News reports that the story began years ago when young Will Harvis was attending San Jose's Harker School and granted the permission to make red wine just like his father, William Jarvis who owns Jarvis winery. Will selected grapes from the 1994 vintage from his family's vineyard and aged it in a two-gallon barrel. After six months, the wine was bottled. As an adult Jarvis finally tasted the wine with his parents and found that it was great so he repeated his experiment in the controlled Jarvis winery cave environment again using a small barrel. Jarvis Winery winemaker Dimitri Tchelistcheff was impressed and a new product was born. The 2007 vintage of Cabernet Franc was aged 9 months in half size barrels and released as the Will Jarvis' Science Project with a production run of just under 400 cases. It sells for $105.

Perrelet Watches Shown At Lussori Store

03.10.2009 13:01   35 views   0 comments

Recently Perrelet watches had a showing at the Lussori watch store in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The event introduced the consumer release of the popular new Perrelet Turbine Watch Collection as well as other luxury watches from the brand. The company is putting a new focus into the American market educating consumers about the value and quality of their watches. Perrelet has further started efforts to make their own watch movements. This is one of the most important steps a luxury brand can take, and the first Perrelet watches with in-house movements are due soon.

Perrelet is making the right decision by choosing to connect closely with watch lovers, so events such as this are a good idea. Brands like Rolex, Breitling, Omega, and IWC all had to put significant efforts into connecting with the watch community before becoming the brands that they are today. Events like this will help Perrelet become better known in the US, like it is in Europe and elsewhere.
